UNOY Photo Competition – “Youth and Volunteering for Peace”

The United Network of Young Peacebuilders (UNOY) is a network of youth-led associations working towards peacebuilding.

As a part of the International Day of Peace celebrations on September 21st, 2011, along with the European Year of Volunteering 2011, the United Network of Young Peacebuilders (UNOY) in partnership with Fundació Catalunya Voluntària is organising a photo competition with the theme "Youth Volunteering for Peace".

We believe that peace can be promoted in many ways. This year we choose pictures to deliver our message of peace. This activity aims to embrace various forms of youth engagement in peacebuilding which are expressed through images. As mentioned, we would like to spread the role of youth participation in peacebuilding and hopefully, encourage more youth involvement in peacebuilding activities.

Participants will be divided into two categories:

  • Members of UNOY (maximum two representatives per member organisation)
  • Individuals aged between 18 and 30

Please note you may only enter one category.

Eurodiaconia Statement on Volunteering in social services in times of austerity, (Eurodiaconia), 2011

Eurodiaconia Statement on Volunteering in social services in times of austerity, Eurodiaconia, July 2011

Summary:

Eurodiaconia has become extremely concerned about a current discourse that has emerged in response to the economic and financial crisis, namely that volunteering should be a means to cushion the impact of the financial crisis, especially in times of austerity measures and cuts in public spending. 2011 is the European Year of Volunteering, and whilst Eurodiaconia wants to use this Year to promote volunteering and recruit more volunteers, we want to raise awareness of the dangers of this discourse and why it could be harmful to European social and health care services and consequently European citizens.

ENGSO Position paper on volunteering (ENGSO), 2011

The European Non-Governmental Sports Organisation (ENGSO) Position paper on volunteering, July 2011.

Summary:

Sport is the biggest sector in volunteering in Europe, and sports organisations rely on volunteers. The European Union should develop European cooperation to promote volunteering through recommendations, relevant EU programmes and enabling visa practices. The development and recognition of the skills and competences of volunteers should be supported. The EU should also aim at decreasing administrative burdens of volunteers and voluntary sports organisations, minimising the unintended harmful consequences that European legislation can have on volunteering, and ensuring the sustainable financing of non-profit voluntary sports organisations.Summary
